A set of six Air Jordan sneakers worn by Michael Jordan during the NBA Finals sold for 39.7 million) at an auction in New York, setting a new world auction record for game-worn sneakers, Sotheby’s auction house announced on Friday (2).
The sneakers, worn by one of the greatest basketball players in the decisive games of his six-time NBA championship career, became the second-highest price ever achieved for a Michael Jordan sports item.
“A truly unparalleled moment and a landmark in auction history, the sale of these six championship sneakers is likely never to be repeated,” said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s director of modern collectibles.
Jordan’s jersey from the opening game of the 1998 NBA Finals, from the famous “Last Dance” season, still holds the world record for any game-worn sports memorabilia, having fetched 50 million) in September 2022.
In December, six shirts worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina’s victorious 2022 World Cup campaign sold for 38.7 million).
