Brazilian boxing legend José Adilson Maguila has passed away at the age of 66. Maguila had a successful career in the heavyweight division, winning the World Boxing Federation title in 1995 and facing off against boxing greats like Evander Holyfield and George Foreman.
During his 17-year professional career, Maguila racked up 77 wins in 85 fights, with 68 of those victories coming by way of knockout. He had been battling chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition likely caused by his years of taking punches in the ring.
The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, with fellow boxer Ancelino Popó Freitas paying tribute to Maguila in a video post. “Rest in peace, eternal champion,” he said.
